What to include
What to provide when you verify accreditation.
Institution name
Provide the institution’s complete current name and, if known, any former, legal, or operating name.
Location
Include the city, state, province, or country associated with the institution.
Website or other identifying information
If known, include the institution’s website or another detail that helps distinguish it from organizations with similar names.
Purpose of the request
Tell us whether the inquiry relates to enrollment, transfer, employment, professional licensing, credential evaluation, government use, institutional due diligence, or another purpose.
Official status terminology
The official NACCUA record controls current status.
Certificates, badges, websites, archived materials, and third-party references are representations of accreditation status; they do not independently create or extend that status.
Provisional Accreditation
Official, time-limited accreditation for a qualifying new institution that has not yet completed the operating history required for Full Accreditation.
Full Accreditation
The institution has completed the required operating history and received an affirmative accreditation decision for the approved scope and term.
Accredited with Conditions
Accreditation is in effect while defined, time-bounded conditions remain open and are monitored under an authorized decision.
Suspended
An existing accreditation has been placed in a restricted status under applicable NACCUA rules.
Withdrawn or Revoked
Accreditation has ended before normal expiration, either voluntarily or through authorized action.
Expired
The accreditation term has ended without successful renewal or another authorized continuation.
Using verification information
Why it matters to verify accreditation directly.
Accreditation information may be used in decisions about enrollment, transfer, employment, licensing, credential evaluation, institutional partnerships, and other forms of due diligence.
Because those decisions can have different requirements, NACCUA confirms only the accreditation status and scope shown in its official record. The receiving institution, employer, licensing authority, evaluator, or government body decides how that information will be used.
For international credential evaluation in the United States, the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) provides information about independent member organizations that evaluate education completed outside the United States.
NACCUA does not control third-party credential evaluations and does not represent that verification of NACCUA accreditation guarantees acceptance of a credential by another organization.
Why current information matters
Accreditation status is time-sensitive information.
An old certificate or third-party webpage can show what was represented at an earlier point in time. It does not necessarily establish the institution’s current accreditation status. When the decision matters, verify accreditation using the current NACCUA record.
NACCUA encourages anyone making a consequential decision to verify current accreditation directly. This is particularly important when a credential will be used for further education, employment, professional licensing, immigration, government purposes, or another setting in which a third party has its own requirements.
When current status matters, verify accreditation through the official NACCUA record rather than relying on an old certificate, badge, archived page, or third-party directory.
For prospective students and third parties
Accreditation is one part of an informed decision.
If you expect to transfer credit
Ask the receiving institution whether it will accept the credit or credential. Receiving institutions establish their own transfer policies.
If you are entering a licensed profession
Contact the relevant licensing authority before enrolling. Professional requirements may depend on program approval, accreditation, coursework, examinations, supervised experience, location, or other factors.
If a credential is intended for employment
Confirm any educational or accreditation requirements that matter to the employer, industry, contract, or position you are pursuing.
If a credential will be evaluated by a government or third party
Ask that organization what documentation and accreditation information it requires. Different organizations may apply different standards and processes.
