Institutional Accreditation Process

A focused review of the institution as a whole.

The NACCUA institutional accreditation process evaluates whether an institution’s mission is supported by credible academic practice, responsible governance, adequate resources, student protections, institutional integrity, and evidence of continuing effectiveness.

NACCUA institutional accreditation process

What accreditation is

An independent evaluation, not a promise of uniformity.

NACCUA approaches the institutional accreditation process as a quality-assurance review grounded in published requirements, documented evidence, and verification appropriate to the institution and requested scope.

The institution is considered in relation to its mission, programs, students, legal authority, governance, faculty and staff, finances, resources, delivery methods, academic policies, public representations, and other responsibilities relevant to the requested accreditation scope.

Accreditation is not intended to make every institution resemble a traditional residential university. NACCUA evaluates whether the institution’s model is coherent, credible, responsibly administered, and capable of supporting the students it chooses to serve.

Institutional review

What the review is designed to understand.

NACCUA evaluates the institution as an interconnected educational organization rather than as a collection of isolated documents.

Mission and institutional identity

Whether the institution’s purpose, legal identity, public representations, and educational scope are clear and credible.

Governance and administration

Whether authority, leadership, policies, responsibilities, and administrative capacity support responsible operations.

Academic programs and curriculum

Whether programs have coherent objectives, appropriate content and rigor, qualified oversight, and suitable methods of delivery.

Faculty and educational personnel

Whether the institution has qualified and sufficient personnel for the programs, students, and responsibilities within scope.

Students and student services

Whether admissions, enrollment, support, complaints, records, and student-facing information are fair, accurate, and effective.

Achievement and effectiveness

Whether the institution measures meaningful educational and operational results and uses evidence to improve.

Resources, technology, and records

Whether learning resources, systems, facilities, security, and recordkeeping are sufficient and reliable.

Financial and operational capacity

Whether the institution can sustain its educational commitments and respond responsibly to material operational risk.

How accreditation works

The institutional accreditation process from eligibility to decision.

Each stage of the institutional accreditation process is designed to build a reliable record before an official accreditation decision is made.

01

Eligibility Review

NACCUA determines whether the institution and requested scope satisfy the threshold requirements for entering the accreditation process.

02

Application

The institution submits required information concerning identity, legal authority, ownership, programs, delivery methods, leadership, finances, and requested accreditation scope.

03

Institutional Accreditation Report

The institution responds to the applicable accreditation standards and identifies the evidence supporting its conformity.

04

Accreditation Review

Qualified reviewers evaluate the application, institutional report, evidence, operations, and other information necessary to reach documented findings.

05

Institutional Response

Where material questions or deficiencies remain, the institution may provide clarification, additional evidence, factual correction, or corrective information within the applicable process.

06

Site Review and verification

NACCUA verifies institutional representations through virtual, in-person, or combined review methods appropriate to the institution, scope, and issues requiring verification.

07

Accreditation Decision

The authorized accreditation decision function considers the completed record and issues the official accreditation outcome with documented rationale and any applicable conditions or limitations.

Accreditation pathways

Provisional and Full Accreditation.

Provisional Accreditation

A time-limited pathway for qualifying new institutions that have not yet completed the operating history required for Full Accreditation. The review considers legal authority, institutional readiness, programs, governance, staffing, resources, systems, student protections, and other applicable requirements.

Full Accreditation

Available only after at least 12 months of actual institutional operation and sufficient operating evidence to support a substantive accreditation judgment. The passage of time alone does not create Full Accreditation; an affirmative decision is required.

Site Review

Verification is part of the accreditation record.

Review may include leadership and faculty interviews, student interviews where useful, systems demonstrations, record sampling, governance verification, review of learning resources, and other methods appropriate to the institution and requested scope.

NACCUA determines whether verification is virtual, in person, or combined and may require additional review when material information cannot otherwise be verified.

Continuing responsibility

Accreditation is maintained, not simply awarded.

  • Maintain conformity with applicable standards
  • Maintain required legal authority
  • Report material changes
  • Comply with conditions and reporting requirements
  • Cooperate with complaints and focused review
  • Maintain accurate public representations
  • Protect institutional and student records
  • Participate in renewal or reaccreditation

Quality assurance context

Evidence, systems, and continuous improvement.

The institutional accreditation process considers whether an institution has credible systems for maintaining educational quality and improving its operations over time.

Educational organizations may also look to broader international quality-management resources. ISO 21001:2025 addresses management systems for educational organizations and provides one external reference point for quality management and continuous improvement.

NACCUA does not require ISO certification, and ISO certification does not substitute for NACCUA accreditation. NACCUA applies its own published standards, evidence requirements, review procedures, and decision rules.

Process timing

A clear and efficient process.

For a prepared institution, NACCUA designs the institutional accreditation process around an approximate six-to-eight-month target from a complete, review-ready application to an accreditation decision.

This is a process objective rather than a guarantee. Timing may be affected by incomplete submissions, institutional response time, material findings, corrective action, complexity, scope, verification needs, or other circumstances affecting the quality of the record.

Evidence sufficiency, independence, due process, and decision integrity are not reduced merely to meet a timeline.
