Quality assurance that respects institutional purpose.
NACCUA exists to provide independent institutional accreditation through a process that examines whether an educational institution can credibly fulfill the mission and commitments it presents to students and the public.
Our approach recognizes that institutions differ in size, educational level, student population, delivery model, geography, organizational structure, and academic emphasis. Those differences do not eliminate the need for standards; they make thoughtful, evidence-based evaluation more important.
We look for a coherent relationship among institutional mission, academic work, governance, resources, student responsibilities, public representation, and continuous improvement. Accreditation is most useful when it provides meaningful assurance without requiring every institution to become the same.
The principle behind the work
Quality does not require uniformity.
A serious accreditation process should be capable of evaluating different educational models without assuming that unfamiliarity is evidence of weakness.
NACCUA begins with the institution’s stated mission and the educational responsibilities that flow from it. The central question is whether the institution’s academic work, administration, resources, policies, and institutional conduct support that mission responsibly.
Institutional autonomy and institutional accountability belong together. Independence is not a substitute for standards. Academic freedom is not a substitute for truthful representation. Innovation is not a substitute for educational coherence. Autonomy is strongest when matched by integrity and accountability.
Our working principles
Six ideas shape NACCUA’s approach.
Academic excellence
Institutions should be able to define what students are expected to learn and demonstrate that programs, instruction, assessment, and academic support are organized to advance those objectives.
Integrity
Accreditation depends on accurate information, ethical conduct, reliable records, responsible governance, and public representations that students and other stakeholders can trust.
Independence
Institutional quality should be evaluated on educational and institutional grounds through defined standards, evidence, professional judgment, and appropriate conflict controls.
Institutional autonomy
Institutions should have meaningful room to define their missions, educational models, and academic priorities while remaining responsible for demonstrating that practice is coherent with the mission asserted.
Innovation
New technologies and educational methods can expand access and create valuable learning opportunities. Innovation should be evaluated by the quality, integrity, and support of the educational experience rather than by whether it follows a single traditional model.
Continuous improvement
Accreditation is more meaningful when institutions examine evidence, identify weaknesses, preserve what works, and strengthen academic and institutional performance over time.

NACCUA’s role is specific: to determine whether an institution satisfies NACCUA’s published accreditation requirements for its stated mission and approved scope.
Review therefore focuses on evidence that can be examined and verified, not on institutional size, prestige, or adherence to a single operating model. This allows different institutions to be evaluated consistently while preserving reasonable differences in mission, structure, educational level, and method of delivery.
Educational quality is also addressed through broader international frameworks. ISO 21001:2025 is an international management-system standard for educational organizations. NACCUA does not require ISO certification and does not use ISO certification as a substitute for its own accreditation standards; the reference is provided only as an external resource on educational quality management and continuous improvement.

NACCUA is designed to provide substantive institutional review without unnecessary bureaucracy. Published requirements, appropriate evidence, qualified review, institutional response, decision integrity, and continuing obligations matter more than the size of the accrediting organization.
Our public information is intended to make the important questions easy to answer: what NACCUA evaluates, who may apply, how the accreditation process works, how current status can be verified, and how institutions and the public can contact us.
